Periodontists are the qualified dentists who work within periodontics. Much of their time is spent trying to prevent, identify and treat the stages of gum disease.
There are two main stages of gum disease:
Gingivitis
When plaque builds up on your teeth it can affect the nearby gums which become red, sore and inflamed. The gums may become swollen and tender. This is the earliest form of gum disease and known as gingivitis. The plaque needs to be removed by thorough brushing and cleaning.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is the more serious form of gum disease and can occur if gingivitis isn’t treated. The gums begin to pull away from the tooth leaving pockets where bacteria can grow and build up. As well as the gums being inflamed and painful, the gums can begin to breakdown leaving the tooth vulnerable. The tooth may then become loose and eventually fall out.
As well as treating gum disease, periodontists are experts in replacing missing teeth. They work with dental implants, treatments for gum recession and gum graft surgery.

Periodontal treatment
If you are showing signs of gum disease, you may be referred to a periodontist.
The periodontist will thoroughly assess your mouth, teeth and gums. You may have X-Rays taken. Your periodontist will form a personal course of treatment to help you. This will usually involve a deep clean of your tooth and gums to remove any plaque and prevent the further spread of infection or disease. They will also provide advice on how to properly keep your teeth and gums clean in future. Healthy gums and teeth not only look and feel good, but they prevent costly and painful problems in the future.
If you need further treatment, you may require antibiotics to deal with periodontitis or even minor surgery to correct problems with the tooth, bone or gum.
The benefits of visiting a periodontist

- At Bath you will be given a personal care programme by professional periodontists who have many years of experience
Frequently asked questions
How can I treat gum disease at home?
Your periodontist will be able to give you a more personal update, but in general you can help by thoroughly brushing your teeth and gums for at least 2 minutes in the morning and last thing at night. Using an antibacterial toothpaste and mouthwash can also help as can flossing your teeth.
How do I know if I have gum disease?
You should visit your dentist if you notice any of the following signs of gum disease: red, swollen or tender gums, gums which bleed during brushing, receding gums, gums that have pulled away from your teeth creating a gap or pocket, bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, pus coming from your gums or between your teeth.
What is the cause of gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by plaque which builds up on the surface of your teeth and gums every day. If left, it will become hard and form tartar. Some of this bacteria within tartar is harmful and can cause gum disease. In order to prevent gum disease, you need to remove the plaque every day by brushing and flossing.
